Although Telegram allows you to choose which notifications you want to receive, there may be times when the app is unable to send any notifications to your Android. While the reason behind this could range from misconfigured settings to corrupted cache data, fixing it shouldn’t take that long.

If you’re missing out on important messages because Telegram isn’t sending notifications, this guide has seven methods that can help you. So, let’s take a look at them.

1. Check the notification settings for Telegram

You can start by checking the system notification settings for Telegram to make sure the app can send alerts on your phone. Here’s how.

Step 1: Press and hold the Telegram app icon and tap the info icon in the menu that appears.

Step 2: Go to Notifications and toggle the switch next to All Telegram notifications. Make sure other notification settings are also enabled.

2. Check the in-app notification settings in Telegram

Next, you will need to go through the in-app notification settings in Telegram to check if you have disabled notifications for private chats, groups or channels. Here’s how to check.

Step 1: Launch the Telegram app on your phone. Tap the three horizontal lines in the top left corner to open Settings.

Step 2: Scroll down to tap Notifications and sounds.

Step 3: Under Notifications for chats, make sure the options next to Private chats, Groups and Channels are enabled.

Step 4: On the same page, scroll down to enable the switches next to Keep-Alive Service and Background Connection.

3. Stop muting conversations

If the problem of notifications not working is limited to a few selected chats, groups or channels, you can check if you have muted any of them. Here’s how.

Step 1: Launch the Telegram app and open the conversation for which notifications are not working.

Step 2: Tap the contact’s name at the top and toggle the switch next to Notifications.

4. Allow Telegram to run in the background

Another reason why Telegram may fail to send you notifications on Android is if the app doesn’t have the necessary permissions to run in the background or if the app is restricted. Here’s how you can change that.

Step 1: Press and hold the Telegram app icon and tap the info icon in the menu that appears.

Step 2: Go to Mobile data and Wi-Fi. Turn on the switch next to Background data and Unrestricted data usage.

Step 3: Go back to the app information page and tap Battery.

Step 4: Remove the background restriction if it is enabled.

5. Disable Do Not Disturb mode and power saving mode

If you have enabled Do Not Disturb mode on your phone, you will not receive notifications from apps and contacts. You will need to disable Do Not Disturb mode from the Sound settings to start receiving notifications from Telegram.

Alternatively, you can also add Telegram as an exception to receive notifications while keeping Do Not Disturb enabled. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open the Settings app and go to Sound. Then tap Do Not Disturb.

Step 2: Go to Apps and then tap Add apps.

Step 3: Scroll down to tap Telegram and enable Allow all notifications.

Also, if you have enabled a battery saver on your Android, Telegram will not be able to run in the background and may not send notifications. To avoid this, you will need to disable battery saving by accessing the battery settings in Android.

6. Clear Telegram cache

Apps like Telegram tend to collect a significant amount of cache data over time. The problem occurs when this data gets old or corrupted and starts to interfere with the app’s functionality. If that is the case, it will be helpful to clear the Telegram app cache.

Step 1: Launch the Telegram app on your phone. Tap the three horizontal lines on the top left corner to open Settings.

Step 2: Go to Data & Storage and tap Storage Usage.

Step 3: Under Device Storage, tap Clear Telegram cache. Toca Borrar caché para confirmar.

7. Update Telegram

If you are running an older version of the Telegram app, you are likely to encounter such issues. Therefore, it is recommended that you keep your apps up to date. Open Play Store to install any pending app updates for Telegram.
